A bright state historical marker on the west side of Broadway summarizes the 1865 Little Arkansas council that involved hundreds of members of the five Plains tribes that camped near here to negotiate a peace settlement with the U.S. government. One mile farther west at 61 and Seneca, a large 1925 DAR plaque memorializes this historic encampment along the Little Arkansas River where the treaty was signed. The agreement allowed for safe passage of settlers and traders on the Santa Fe Trail. But peace was fleeting and within two years another treaty was negotiated near Medicine Lodge.
